White Recognized for Coaching Success

Carina White, head coach of the Speech and Debate Team at Green River High School, was recently honored as the 4A Coach of the Season by the Wyoming High School Forensics Association. The WHSFA is a state-wide association that encourages and advances speech in all its phases in Wyoming schools.

In announcing the award, Daniel Parson, President of the WHSFA, notes, “Carina’s success and skills as a coach are without peer, as reflected by the vote of our membership with respect to this award. This award speaks to the respect her fellow coaches hold for her. Coach White received five nominations, more than any other nominee I can recall, and a large percentage of the vote. It is clear the WHSFA membership values the important contributions made by her over the years.”

In nominating White to the WHSFA Coach of the Season ballot this year, one of her peers noted, “I have to admit, when I first started coaching back in this state I thought Carina was unapproachable, as cold as a block of ice yet cross her team and you would burn from the fire in her eyes. All misconceptions, well you could still burn if hurt her team. While being 100% focused on her own team, she has never failed to help out someone in need, give advice to, or lend her vast knowledge and opinion on any subject. She is a champion for Policy Debate, trying to resurrect it from almost extinction. She doesn’t hesitate to work/run a tab room for a tournament (just have hot tea, lavender for stress, on hand for her). There are few teams in the state that can claim a winning record like Green River and few coaches that could pull off that kind of respect with dignity and humility. Fire or ice, she is a COACH, a mother (not to just her own daughter), a mentor, and friend.”

White has coached the Green River team since 2008 and earned her Diamond Award from the National Forensic League in 2014. This is the 9th straight year the Green River team has placed in the top 3 at the state competition. They have earned 7 state team championships, had more than 60 national qualifiers, and a dozen individual state champions. Her team has been consistently ranked in the top 3% of teams across the country.
